September 19-23, 2022

The adventure continues in first grade as we continue to learn new concepts and add words to our written and oral language.  We are excited as we continue our journey.

Spalding: This week scholars will learn 5 new words each day and will have a 15 word spelling test on Friday. Phonogram focus: a, ay, eigh, oo, ou, g, y, ie, h, i

Grammar: Scholars will continue identifying the difference between common nouns and proper nouns. Be on the lookout for a study guide that will be sent home on Monday, September 19th. Our “Nouns Test” will be given on Thursday, September 22nd. Please study the study guide with your child each night.

This week the scholars will begin a new unit on subtraction. We will review our test from the previous Friday to start off the week to address any misconceptions. An overview of our new unit will be sent home on Tuesday. Our main focus this week will be on the basic concept of taking away. We will be using cube manipulatives to model our thinking in class as well as using pictures to visualize the problem. We will also be addressing the differences between how to use a number bond for addition versus subtraction. Our main vocabulary this week will be subtract from, left, subtraction, and minus. You can use this vocabulary to help your scholar at home.

In Literature this week, scholars will continue reading Frog and Toad Together.  We will work on retelling stories using "Beginning, Middle, and End" and "First, Next, Then, Last".  We will also discuss the virtues of Will Power and Courage.  Scholars will get the opportunity to reflect on how they can show these virtues in their own lives.  For Poetry, we will be begin memorizing the poem "Bird Talk".

This week will be wrapping up Mesopotamia, with a unit test on Wednesday. Then we will begin discussing Ancient Egypt.

In Science, we will be learning the parts of a plant.

The Big Give is this Thursday, September 22.  Please join us for all the festivities!
