August 15th-19th

Spalding: This week in Spalding, our scholars will learn how to identify sounds and form words based off of those sounds. We will begin with 4-5 new words each day (Monday-Wednesday) for the first couple of months. We will then jump up to 10 new words each day at the beginning of October. We will have “Review Days” every Thursday, and a Spelling Test every Friday. For Spalding homework, parents are expected to dictate each word to their Scholar each week. Further instruction is included on the homework sheet. Please encourage your scholar to always use their best handwriting, as handwriting is part of their homework and test grade.

Math: This week the scholars will be focusing on the concepts of counting forwards and backwards within 10. Our main vocabulary focuses during this week will be count on, count back, and as many as. While helping your scholar with homework this week, we encourage you to also use this language to help solidify the concepts to them. We also highly encourage having your scholar practice counting forwards and backwards within ten as often as possible. This is a key concept that will be built upon for the remainder of the year.

Literature: This week in Literature we will be reading and discussing two similar stories from different lands, The tale of Little Red Riding hood from France and Lon PoPo from China.  We will be working to identify story elements as well as comparing and contrasting details between the two tales. For poetry we will be continuing to look at our poems "Table Manners" by Gelett Burgess and "Now We Are Six" by A.A. Milne.

Grammar and Writing: In Grammar, scholars will learn about complete sentences, capital letters and periods. Students will also focus on common nouns this week.

History: In History, we will be talking about maps and symbols, and geography of America and other countries.

Science: In Science, we will be talking about the sun. We will focus on the follow questions:

- What direction does the sunset?

- What direction does the sunrise?
