August 22-26

Spalding: After looking at the Spalding data from this week, the first grade team has decided to take a step back and focus on phonograms and handwriting for the week. In class we will practice 10-15 phonograms a day while focusing on pencil grip, pencil pressure and letter formation. Below is a link to all 87 phonograms and their sounds. In first grade, we only focus on phonograms 1-70. We highly encourage all families to purchase their own set of Splading phonograms cards to use at home. They can be purchased from www.spaldingeducationstore.org for $15.

Math: This week the scholars will focus on comparing numbers. Our main academic vocabulary we will focus on is "more than" and "less than".  The scholars will have homework in their Additional Practice books ( blue books) most nights. Please help your scholar to bring this book back each day.

Literature: In Literature we will be reading stories of little people with big virtue.  These stories are Issun Boshi, Tom Thumb, Thumbelina, and Little Finger of the Watermelon Patch.  We will also be starting the poem "I'm Glad" which will be our first poetry recitation of the year on Monday, September 5th.

Grammar and Writing: Scholars have been learned that a capital letter and a period help make a complete sentence. This week, scholars will learn the difference between common nouns and proper nouns.

History: We will be continuing our unit on Countries, Maps and the Four Directions.

Science:We will be talking about the night, day, sun and moon.

Reminder: Please help your scholar pack their homework each night. While they are still getting into a routine of having homework nightly, they may need some support in making sure their folder and blue book is in their backpack for the next day. While this is ultimately the scholars responsibility, we do appreciate your support!
