Oct. 31- Nov. 4

Spalding: Spalding: Scholars will learn ten new words each day this week. There will be a 30 word test on Friday, so be sure you are reviewing these words with your scholar each night. As a reminder, Spalding homework only has markings, no rules are needed. Scholars will never be tested on rules or markings, only spelling. Phonogram focus: aw, au, ee, ea, sh, ck, oo, ow, ai, or

Math: This week we will be starting our next unit. We will be focusing on a different ways to add numbers together within 20. We will be learning the count on strategy, making ten first, and combining parts to make counting easier. Our goal is to help the scholars find new ways to help them add numbers before we get into harder numbers. 

Literature:  This week in Literature we will continue with our Fairy Tale unit.  We will be reading and discussing Rapunzel and The Frog Prince.  We will be identifying key elements of both tales and comparing and contrasting the two using a Venn Diagram.  We will also be practicing a fun new poem this week called The Purple Cow by Gellette Burgess.  This poem will not be recited for a grade. 

Grammar: Students will continue to build their pronoun knowledge this week. Last week, scholars learned pronouns I, me, my, mine, you, your, and yours. This week, we will emphasize pronouns he, she, him, her, it, his, hers, its, we, us, our, ours, they, them, their, and theirs

History: We will be discussing Christianity. On, Monday, we will be discussing the story of Jesus. On Wednesday, we will be discussing what is Christianity. On Friday, we will be making another craft.

Science: We will be wrapping up unit 2. Tuesday, we will discuss what it is like to be a scientist and scuba diving. On Thursday, we will be doing an activity to wrap up the unit.


Coming up: 

  • November 16 & 17th are Grandparent's Days at Great Hearts Western Hills for K-5th.

Our Spartan Grandparents are invited to join us from 9 AM to 10:30 AM in the GHWH Gym. Over the two mornings, our attendees can expect refreshments, a welcome from our Headmaster, photos with "grand-scholars," and a chance to see inside their classrooms.

Families will need to RSVP for their day corresponding to their grade level

  • Thursday, November 17th - Kinder, First, and Second Grade Grandparents may attend.


  • Guidelines for Literary Character Day Dress Up Day (11/18):

Students may dress up as any character from any book on 8 Classics to Keep List, a grade-level read-aloud book, Greek or Roman Mythology or a historical character from our curriculum at Western Hills and come to school primed for a joyful day filled with reading. 

 

  • Students who do not wish to wear a costume should come to school in his or her regular uniform. 
  • Parents MUST fill out and turn in a Costume Proposal Slip to their teacher on or before Wednesday, November 16th in order for your student to participate in Character Dress up Day. The costume MUST be approved by the teacher.  
  • No masks or all-over face paint (freckles, mustaches, etc. are okay)
  • Hats, gloves, ears, etc. are acceptable as long as they stay on and are not a distraction (teacher will confiscate if that happens).
  • No props, such as weapons, baskets, wands, etc.
  • If the costume is such that it needs clothes underneath, it should be their uniform. 
  • Please keep in mind students will be going to recess in their costumes, so one that allows free movement is encouraged.
