September 26-30, 2022

Fall has arrived and first grade is falling into a new season of learning as we continue to seek what is true, what is beautiful, and what is good.

Spalding: This week, scholars will begin to learn seven new words each day. There will be a 21-word spelling test this Friday. Phonogram focus: er, ay, a, c, ng, ee, tu, ey, v, ou

Grammar: Scholars will continue to practice identifying common nouns and proper nouns. Scholars will also focus on capitalization, specifically with first and last names and names of states.

Math: In math this week we will continue focusing on subtraction within 10. We will spend time at the beginning of the week focusing on how we can use number bonds in subtraction and how number bonds in general can be used for both addition and subtraction. We will then move into writing addition/subtraction fact families. This can be a tricky concept for first graders, so we always want to be sure to approach it with grace. We will finish the week by learning about how to compare two numbers in subtraction.

In literature we will be learning about trickster tales. We will read our first trickster tale and work to identify who the trickster is and what trick was played.  We will also be starting Frog and Toad All Year.  We will complete pre-reading activities and find evidence in the text to support our thoughts and conclusions. For poetry, we will be continuing to study "Bird Talk" by Aileen Fisher, which will be recited in class on Tuesday, October 4th.

History: We will be discussing Ancient Egypt. Celebration on Thursday, Sept. 29th. Please bring in a black shoe box no later than Tuesday, Sept 27th.

Science: We will discuss how do plant parts help the plant?

Weekly reminders:

  • The sign-up genius for our celebration has been sent out! If you are able to donate to our gathering, we would greatly appreciate it! Please turn in donations by Tuesday, September 27th.
  • Please ensure your scholar brings a shoebox painted back with their name no later than Tuesday, September 27th.
