October 14-18
One more week until Thanksgiving Break! Here is what we will be up to:
Spalding: Scholars will learn ten new words each day this week. There will be a 30 word test on Friday, so be sure you are reviewing these words with your scholar each night. As a reminder, Spalding homework only has markings, no rules are needed. Scholars will never be tested on rules or markings, only spelling. Phonogram focus: ed, ea, ow, wh, er, ng, y, th, f, ay
Math: This week we will be reviewing the concepts learned in Chapter 5 and preparing for our test on Friday, November 18th. The scholars have learned many different strategies to add and subtract. These are all simply tools that the scholars can use as they progress as mathematicians!
Literature: This week in Literature we will be reading our last Fairy Tales! We will be working on sequencing important events from stories and identifying Fairy Tale elements as we discuss Jack and the Beanstalk, Puss in Boots, and The Princess and the Pea. We will wrap up this unit after break with our review and assessment. A study guide will be sent home this week to help your scholar prepare for that test on Thursday, November 30th. Our poetry recitation for "Thanksgiving" by Leanne Guenther will be Thursday, November 17th. Please continue practicing this poem with your scholar at home, so that they are prepared to recite from memory and without prompts.
Grammar: Scholars have learned about common nouns, proper nouns, and pronouns this school year. The students have learned the definition of each and how to identify these specific words in sentences. We will continue to review these topics this week with a new focus on verbs. A verb is a word that does an action, shows a state of being, links two words together, or helps another verb. This week, scholars will be concentrating on action verbs!
History: We will be finishing our unit on the Three World Religion. Monday is a review day. Wednesday will be the test. On Friday, we will do an activity to wrap up the entire unit.
Science: We are going to be studying all about rocks! We will be discussing three types of rocks: Sedimentary, Metamorphic, Igneous.
Coming up:
*Literary Character day is right around the corner. Literary Character day will take place on November 18. This is a day where the scholars can dress up as a character from any of the classics to keep from any grade level or Greek or Roman mythology, or any story learned throughout out the year (ex. fairytales). The scholars are not required to dress up if they would not like to. If this is the case, they can wear their regular school uniform. We ask no masks or all-over face paint (freckles, mustaches, etc. are okay). Things like hats, gloves, ears, etc. are acceptable as long as they stay on and are not a distraction. We also will not allow props such as weapons, baskets, wands, etc. You can find the classics to keep list at the link above.
