October 7-11
Happy November!
We started off the month with field day! We are so incredibly proud of all of the first grade scholars with their teamwork and sportsmanship.
Below you will find out about what they will be up to next week:
Spalding: Scholars will learn eight to ten new words each day this week. There will be a 28 word test on Friday, so be sure you are reviewing these words with your scholar each night. As a reminder, Spalding homework only has markings, no rules are needed. Scholars will never be tested on rules or markings, only spelling. Phonogram focus: ed, er, ear, oo, ai, ng, wh, ck, sh, ee
Math: This week the scholars will continue with addition within 20 and will venture into subtraction within 20. We will spend the first part of the week learning about adding with doubles (i.e. 5+5=, 7+7=, etc.) and adding three 1-digit numbers together. As we move into subtraction, we will focus on subtracting ones from a 2-digit number and subtracting from tens in a 2-digit number.
Literature: This week in Literature we will continue to study Fairy Tales. We will read Hansel and Gretel and discuss the exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. We will also be reading two different Cinderella stories, one from France and one from China. We will work to compare and contrast the similar stories. For poetry we will being our memorization of Thanksgiving by Leanne Guenther. The recitation for this poem will be Thursday, November 17th.
Grammar/Writing: This week scholars will review common nouns, proper nouns, and pronouns. A pronoun is a word used in the place of a noun. Scholars will be tested on their knowledge on what they’ve learned so far on Thursday, November 10th
History: On Monday, we will be discussing the history of Islam. On Wednesday, we will be discussing items such as the star and crescent and the Mosque. On Friday, we will be creating a craft.
Science:On Tuesday, we will be reviewing for our Plants and Animals test. On Thursday, we will be taking the test.
Coming up:
Literary Character day is right around the corner. Literary Character day will take place on November 18. This is a day where the scholars can dress up as a character from any of the classics to keep from any grade level or Greek or Roman mythology, or any story learned throughout out the year (ex. fairytales). The scholars are not required to dress up if they would not like to. If this is the case, they can wear their regular school uniform. We ask no masks or all-over face paint (freckles, mustaches, etc. are okay). Things like hats, gloves, ears, etc. are acceptable as long as they stay on and are not a distraction. We also will not allow props such as weapons, baskets, wands, etc. You can find the classics to keep list at the link above.
