December 5th- 9th

First grade families,

We are so proud of the hard work and dedication made by our scholars at the winter concert! We hope you enjoyed the show.

We also had our fairy tales celebration this week and boy, was it a blast! Thank you all for your continued support to make such opportunities possible for the scholars!

  • Virtue of December: Courage

Let's take a look at what's to come next week:

Spalding: Scholars will learn ten new words each day this week. There will be a 30 word test on Friday, so be sure you are reviewing these words with your scholar each night. Phonogram focus: oa, ar, ay, er, ear, aw, sh, ea, a, o

Math: The scholars will be focusing on using the part-whole model to solve addition and subtraction problems. This will help set them up for success as they go into higher grades and learn bar models. We will wrap up the week learning about how to compare two separate part-whole models.

Literature: The scholars will be reading and comparing/contrasting different version of the Cinderella story from around the world. In preparation for the their upcoming independent study project, they will also spend some time learning about catfish and practicing presenting information they have learned. The students will have homework in literature on Thursday so be sure to be on the look out.

Grammar: Scholars will review all they have learned about common nouns, proper nouns, pronouns, and action verbs this school year. Scholars will also be focusing on abbreviating titles of respect this week.

History: The scholars will continue learning about the early explorers. We will spend time learning about John Smith and his contribution to the to Jamestown's success. We will also dive into the reasons England wanted to explore North America and the importance of the Roanoke colony.

Science: In preparation of the independent study project, we will spend the next two weeks learning about the five habitats: ocean, rainforest, tundra, savannah, and desert. We will be learning general facts about each habitat and completing a note catcher for each. The students will be able to use the note catcher as a resource when completing their project if they would like but it is not required.
